Guerrilla Gardening

candywrapper:

Saw an interesting picture on Tiffany’s tumblr and decided to research more on the subject:

  • For those of you that don’t know, what guerrilla gardeners believe is that abandoned or neglected land should not be left in that state simply because it does not belong to us. So they plant flowers and ferns to give it a sort of new purpose.
  • It is sometimes referred to as “graffiti with nature”.
  • This is, in fact, kind of illegal. People, companies or local government own the land which these ‘gardeners’ cultivate, and interfering with other people’s land is illegal.
  • But they make the everything so pretty! See tons of examples (with pictures!!) here and here.
  • There is a book. And a Facebook group.
  • Adidas has actually joined up with dazed & confused (magazine) to encourage people to do guerrilla gardening in grim and ugly places. Submit a picture of your efforts - the ten winners get a discount on any Adidas gear.

This is one of my favorite things I have seen today.  I am so inspired to start my own Delmarva militia…I won’t start a new tumblr but if anyone is interested I will squeeze the lemon just a bit more to find some time to “fight the filth with ferns and flowers.”
